Mt. Morris, IL, Velva Rosalie Unger, age 97, formerly of Polo, IL passed away on Sunday February 28, 2021 in Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home, Mt. Morris, IL. Velva was born on May 10, 1923 in Polo, IL the daughter of John & Neva (Coffman) Gatz. She graduated from Polo, High School class of 1942 and she attended Palmer Chiropractic School.
Velva married Donald W. Unger on September 10, 1942 in Dixon, IL and he preceded her in death on July 3, 2007. Velva was a school bus driver for 16 years, Chief Deputy for the Lee County Housing Authority, but most of all she was a homemaker raising her children. She was a founding member of Open Sesame Childcare Center, Dixon, IL, and she mentored many refugees.
Velva is survived by her children: Jean (Tom) Johnson, Rockford, IL; Dennis (Becky) Unger, Manchester, IN; Ann Flessner, Winchester, VA; grandchildren: Dawn (Randy) Clark; Matthew (Lindsy) Unger; Amy (Kyle) Unger; Laura (Jeremy) Flessner; Chris (Beth) Flessner; Clint (Teresa) Flessener; great grandchildren: Alissa Clark; Erica, Nathan, Trent, Sara, and Chase Flessner; Lilly & Grayson Unger; and Ayla & Lennon Leffel; great great grandchildren: Rosalie Clark and Kevin McCallister; Brother: Lorin Gatz; and several nieces and nephews.
Velva is preceded in death by her parents; husband: Donald; sister: Lila Kaufman; Brother: Marvin Gatz; and infant brother: Irvin Gatz.
Cremation rights have been accorded with Finch Funeral Home, 405 East Hitt, Mt. Morris, IL. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
