Thomas M. Miller
Tom peacefully passed away on September 20, 2023 at Serenity Home & Hospice in Oregon, IL.
He was the son of Harold and Angela (McLennan) Miller and was born in Elmhurst, IL on October 31st, 1944.
Tom graduated from Mt. Morris High School (Class of ’63) where he loved being on the football, basketball, and track and field teams. Tom liked to warmly say, “Once a Mounder, always a Mounder!”
After Tom graduated High School he went on to become an active community member of the City of Oregon. He proudly served 13 years with the Oregon volunteer Fire Department. He was an auxiliary Police Officer from 1974-1976. He became the first Oregon officer to attend and graduate from the University of Illinois Police Training Academy in Springfield while working as a fulltime Police Officer for the City of Oregon. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1982, and to Chief of Police in 1985 where he proudly served the community until his retirement in June of 2005. During his years of service as a Police Chief, he was elected President of the Illinois Northwest Chief of Police Association in 1986.
Before serving two consecutive terms as Oregon City Councilman from January 2007 through December 2014, he was awarded Citizen of the Year in 2006.
Tom is survived by the love of his life, wife Janie (Wieberg), their adoring “puppy” Bella, loving children Ann (Kevin) Collins of Chapel Hill, NC; Sharri (Paul) Miller-Regan of Portland, OR; Dawn-Marie Manser of Mt. Morris, IL; J.J. (Megan) Willis Hanover TWP, PA; Chad (Ann) Willis of Huntley, IL; 6 grandchildren; Haleigh, Kevin, Colton, Hope, Branden, and Beck. Dedicated brothers; James (Carol) of Stillman Valley, IL; Stephen (Susan) of Saldo, TX and many nieces and nephews.
Tom was preceded in death by his beloved parents; Harold and Angela (McLennan), devoted sister Angela Leary, brother in law Don Leary, brother David as well as numerous aunts and uncles.
A memorial mass will be held November 11th, 2023 on what would have been Tom and Janie’s 37th wedding anniversary. Mass will begin at 11:00am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oregon. Father Joseph Naill will be officiating. The burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery on West Pines Road in Oregon.
