Robert A. (“Mutt”) Ross
Robert (93) passed away peacefully at home, after courageously battling multiple illnesses on Sunday December 27, 2020. Robert was affectionately known as “Mutt” by many. Born April 20, 1927 as the 6th and youngest child of Clarence and Ada (Swanson) Ross in Sycamore, IL. At the age of 3 Robert became the foster child of Wallace and Jesse Sabin after the passing of his mother. He stayed with and was so grateful to the Sabin family. He eventually came to Byron, IL with his foster family. Bob immediately joined the U.S. Army in July of 1945 after graduating from Byron High School. A veteran of WWII Bob served the majority of his enlistment in Germany. Bob returned to Byron after his service making the area his permanent home. Bob enjoyed being outside including working in his yard and gardens as recently as last fall, good company and working hard. He held as many as three jobs at once, including Barber Coleman; then retiring officially at the age of 85. Bob was a very talented musician performing in many bands as a singer and drummer. He became actively involved in the community through the Byron Museum of History and was honored to be the featured speaker at the 2019 Byron Memorial day festivities. Bob donated several items from his military service to the museum. He married Bebe on October 15, 1966 in Rockford, Illinois. Robert is survived by step daughter Joanie (Dean) Carlson, step son Steve (Carol) Walters and son Brian Ross and numerous extended family members and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Clarion, Dorothy, Thelma, Gladys, and special sister Helen. Mutt maintained a sharp mind and sense of humor all the way to his passing remembering his Las Vegas trip at the age of 87 and ability to laugh about current events. The family wishes to express gratitude to all those who provided support including but not limited to neighbors Dale and Karla, Jen and Val from the Oncology Center, Jim Hess, nephews Joe and Darryl. A private service is to be held at a later date.
