Robert N Bennett

February 19, 1940 ~ June 8, 2023 (age 83) 83 Years Old

Obituary

Mt. Morris, IL, Robert (Bob) Noel Bennett, age 83, passed away on June 8, 2023 at KSB Hospital surrounded by his family.  Bob was born on February 19, 1940 in Chicago, IL, the son of Joseph and Mary (McCabe) Bennett.

Bob graduated from Providence St. Mel High School in 1958, was in the Army from 1958-1960 and graduated from DeVry Tech in 1964 with an Associate’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. On June 8, 1963, Bob married the love of his life, Carol Sylvester, at St. Pascal Church, Chicago, IL.

Bob and Carol have spent 55 years in the community.  During this time, he worked at Kable Printing from 1964 to 1971 as an electrician while volunteering for the Mt. Morris Fire Department. He then joined the Schaumburg Fire Department in 1971 until he retired in 1994 as a Lieutenant.  Memberships include the Sunset Golf Course (board member for 16 years), Mt. Morris Moose Lodge, VFW, and the American Legion.

So, who was Bob Bennett? He was an excellent handyman, could fix anything, and knew electrical and plumbing like the back of his hand. (If God is a carpenter, he’s about to get a lesson.) He owned a tool for every need and sometimes duplicates.  But if you borrow a tool, don’t put it back in the wrong spot! Everything has its place even inside the house.  Did you know he used to drag race at the Byron Dragway in his 1964 light blue Chevy Nova? He could even steer with his knees! Boy, how things have changed. He could be seen cruising the town in his car or in his “jazzed up” golf cart at the same speed in both…SLOOOOOW! Bob was always buying or selling vehicles, so much so we’ve lost count on how many he owned over the years. One of his mottos was “Everything’s for sale.”  Oh and, have you experienced his mad dance moves? Guaranteed trip to the chiropractor the next day.

Sunset Golf Course will miss his wealth of knowledge and “strong suggestions” on every aspect of its business.  He could remember how he wired the electricity in the golf cart barn, how the irrigation system functioned, the history of the equipment, and on and on.

Not only did he love playing poker and golf, his daily routine meant a visit to the Peppermill at 4:30pm SHARP every day, parking in HIS spot, and sitting in HIS seat at the bar.

Bob may have been a man of few words but he was always listening. When he did speak it was brief, intentional, and you grasped the message.

Bob and Carol were married 60 years to the day of his passing which is something to be admired.

Bob is survived by his wife, Carol; his children: Cary (Jeanette) Bennett, Mt. Morris, IL, Julie (Shane) Jeffers, Avon, IN, Nancy (Tommy) Ackerman, Louisville, KY, Scot (Maggie) Bennett, Chicago, IL, Christy (Scott) Gilbert, Oregon, IL; his grandchildren: Breann Bennett, Ryan (Emily) Bennett, Taylor (Ethan) Harrison, Erin Jeffers, Tori (Logan) Jeffers, Amanda Jeffers, Ryan (Tori) Ackerman, Cameron (Summer) Ackerman, Carly Gilbert, Amy (Rob) Gilbert, Michael (Jessica) Gilbert; his great grandchildren: Walker Ackerman, Paxton Laurent, Brayden Wilson, Emma Gilbert, Brooklyn Wilson, Makayla Gilbert.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary Bennett, and a great grandson, Grayson Wilson.

A private family burial will be on July 23, 2023 at Oakwood Cemetery, Mt. Morris, IL.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Mt. Morris Moose Lodge on Saturday, July 22, 2023, 1:00-4:00pm. We ask you to gather and celebrate Bob’s life with us by sharing your favorite memories and joyful moments.
