Howard Flick Obituary

Howard Harold Flick, 94, of Polo, Illinois passed away on August 18th, 2021 at FHN Memorial Hospital in Hospice Care. Howard was a Navy veteran, then draftsman, architect, estimator, and artist.

 

Howard was born in Chicago, IL on October 1st, 1926 to Helen Krapell Flick and Carl Flick. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served in the Pacific Theatre for 3 years on LST 916 as Fireman, First Class. His service took him to many places, including the Solomon Islands, the Philippines and Japan. He came home to complete his diploma at Lane Technical High School in Chicago. After graduation, he worked for several architectural firms in Chicago, then for General Doors and Montgomery Ward.

 

He married Wanda Kolach (1928-2002) on August 28, 1948. They loved remodeling homes together and established Spring Acres Girls Camp in Mt. Morris, IL in 1966.

Howard finished his working career as a construction estimator with Sjostrom and Sons of Rockford, IL. He loved his job and enjoyed involvement with new construction projects and renovation of places such as the Courthouse in Freeport and the DeSoto Hotel in Galena, IL.

 

His surviving relatives include daughters Deborah Brue (Allen), Rebecca Iverson (Jim) and Cynthia Hongsermeier (Bruce), 7 Grandchildren, 3 Great Grandchildren, and a niece, 3 nephews, and cousin in-law. Howard also leaves behind his beloved friend Vicenta (Vicky) Pantuso of Polo, IL who was a 12 -year companion and caregiver to him.

 

On Tuesday, September 7th, visitation, service, internment and military salute will occur at an open-air tent near the gravesite in the Fairmount Cemetery- Catholic section, Polo, IL. Please bring a folding chair if you will be staying for the memorial service and military salute. Visitation will start at 10:30 am. Pastor Bruce McKanna of the Evangelical Free Church of Mt. Morris will conduct services beginning at 11:30 am.  A Celebration of Life will follow in the banquet room of Dad’s Bar and Grill and Pinecricker Café on Mason Street in Polo, IL

 

Guests may wish to order flowers by Friday 9/3, from Country Floral of Polo, IL. to insure early delivery to the cemetery tent on the morning of the service (815-946-3952). Guests are also welcome to bring lawn chairs for comfort.
