Mt. Morris IL, Warren B. Long, age 89, graduated to his home in heaven on Tuesday, January 7, 2020. Warren was born on March 3, 1930, the son of Warren H. and Esther M Long of Rockford IL. Warren had three sisters and was the third child in the pecking order. He joined the Army on November 30, 1955. On May 1, 1957 he married Lillian M. Zumdahl and shortly thereafter left for the Korean War. He returned 1 year, 3 months and 20 days later and was assigned to the role of Golf Club pro at Army bases in Louisiana and Texas. It was in those assignments that Warren and Lillian had two sons, Edward and Bryan.
Warren was an outstanding athlete in High school but quit after his father died when he was 16. He finished his GED in the Army in 1957. While in the Army he earned the designation of Sharpshooter and was the recipient of the Good Conduct Metal on multiple occasions. Upon his discharge from the military in 1962 the family returned to Mt. Morris and began farming.
Over his lifetime Warren did many things from farming to selling feed, operating a golf course as club pro to managing a restaurant with his wife; he even drove an 18 wheeler for a number of years and finished off his career as a Parks Dept employee for the Village of Mt. Morris.
Warren is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lillian, his four children, Edward (Cindy) of Houston, TX, Bryan (Suzette) of Seguin, TX, Daniel Herlugson (Patti) of Bend, OR, and Diane (Ben) Goldsmith, of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren Adam, Nathan, Hannah, Tessa, Andrew and Victoria; six great grandchildren; and youngest sister, Helen M. Emerick, of Winnebago, IL.
Warren is preceded in death by his parents and two older sisters.
Visitation will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mt. Morris, IL. on Friday morning February 21, 2020 beginning at 9:00 am with a Memorial service to follow at 11:00 am in Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial will be held at a later date.
