Leaf River, IL, Thelma Elizabeth Newcomer, age 104, died on Monday January 25, 2016 in the Maple Crest Care Center, Belvidere, IL. Thelma was born April 25, 1911 in Egan, IL the daughter of John E. & Verna L. (Plum) Haire. Thelma graduated from Leaf River High School class of 1928 and Northern Illinois University. She married Joseph C. Newcomer on May 16, 1931 in Wyanet, IL and he preceded her in death on September 20, 1992. Thelma was an Elementary School Teacher for Leaf River School District for 33 years retiring in 1972. She was a member of Leaf River United Methodist Church, National & Illinois Education Association, Illinois Retired Teachers Association, Daughter's of The Nile, Rockford, IL, Byron Senior Center, Byron, IL, Ogle County Republican Women, and Women of The Moose, Mt. Morris, IL. Thelma is survived by her Son: Stephen (Carole) Newcomer, Rockford, IL; Daughter: Kathleen (Larry) Krause, Renton, WA; Grandchildren: Susan (Mike) Connell, DeWitt, IA, Greta (Gunter) Ertel, Mukilteo, WA, and Zachary (Lisa) Newcomer, Wauwatosa, WI ; Great-Grandchildren: Erin, Bryan, and Dillon Connell, DeWitt, IA, Lydia Ertel, Mukilteo, WA, Alex and Max Newcomer, Wauwatosa, WI. Thelma is preceded in death by her Parents, Husband: Joseph Newcomer; Son: Denny Newcomer; Sisters: Phyllis Hawkins and Bernice Faught. Memorial services will be held Friday January 29, 2016 at 12:00 P.M. in Leaf River United Methodist Church, Leaf River, IL with Rev. David Poust officiating. Private burial will be held in Chapel Hill Memorial Park, Freeport, IL. Visitation will be held Friday January 29, 2016 from 11:00 A.M. until service time in the Church. Memorials to Leaf River United Methodist Church and/or Shriner's Crippled Children's Hospital.
