Byron, IL, Former Mt. Morris, IL resident, Marvin E. Toms, age 80, passed away Monday March 25, 2013 in his Home. Marvin was born July 9, 1932 in Polo, IL the son of Earl & Ada (Piper) Toms. Marvin married Ellen T. Egan on June 1, 1957 in Oregon, IL, and she preceded him in death on November 27, 1980. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving 7 years from (1949-1956), spending 3 years in the Far East as a tank commander during the Korean War. Marvin was employed by Kable Printing Company for 38 years. Marvin enjoyed playing guitar and listening to country music, and his favorite musician was the late Hank Williams, Sr. Marvin enjoyed spending time with his cat, watching women's tennis and softball on TV and telling stories about his life to family and friends. He was a member of the Loyal Order of The Moose #1551, and he was a Mt. Morris resident for over 3 decades moving to Byron, IL in 1991. Marvin spent most of his life doting on his nieces, nephews, only daughter and especially his two grandsons. Marvin is survived by his daughter: Stephanie (Dan) Hanlin, Byron, IL, Grandsons: Travis and Tyler Hanlin of Byron, IL. Brother: James Toms, Dixon, IL; and several in-laws, nieces and nephews. Marvin is preceded in death by his parents; Wife: Ellen; Brothers: Howard, Vernon (Zeke), Maynard, Donald, and Ross (Dar); Sisters: Ruth, Eileen, Anna Margaret, and Marion. Celebration of his life will be Thursday March 28, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. in Finch Funeral Home, 405 East Hitt, Mt. Morris, IL with Rev. Doc Newcomb officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Oregon, IL. Visitation will be Wednesday March 27, 2013 from 5:00 P.M. till 7:00 P.M. in Finch Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, tax-deductible donations in Marvin's name can be made to Honor Flight of the Quad Cities, which provides free trips to Washington D.C. for WWII and Korean War veterans for a day of honor and reflection.
