Mt. Morris, IL - Donald B. "Mississippi Slim" Smith, 89, died April 4, 2010 at the Ogle County Hospice Serenity Home. Born on March 14, 1921 in Winnebago, IL to Neil and Nellie (Brenner) Smith. He graduated from Winnebago High School and the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He served in the US Coast Guard in the North Atlantic Theater during W.W.II. He married Marilyn J. Mumbower on July 6, 1999 in Freeport, IL. He worked as a Plant Manager for Carnation Milk Co. in Sparta, TN; owned and operated Southern Window Service in Lexington, KY; Sales Superintendent of Armour Ag. Chemical Company in Chicago Heights, IL. He was a member of the Mt. Morris American Legion Post 143; VFW Post 8455 in Kansas City, Missouri; life member of Disabled American Veterans. For many years Don wrote a syndicated newspaper column called "Rowing Along With Mississippi Slim". He is survived by his wife Marilyn; 1 step-daughter, Leann (Jon) Jensen, Sharon, MA; twin grandsons, Michael and Tyler Jensen, Sharon, MA. Predeceased by his parents, 5 brothers, and 3 sisters. Services will be Friday, April 9, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at Finch Funeral Home with Rev. Rich Fassig, Chaplain for Ogle County Hospice, officiating. Burial at Winnebago Cemetery, Winnebago, IL. Visitation will be Friday, April 9, 2010 from 10:00 A.M. until service time. Memorials to be established. Arrangements by Finch Funeral Home, Mt. Morris, IL.
