Polo, IL

Connie M. Mummert (Gilbert), 72, of Polo, Illinois, passed away surrounded by her beloved family on August 19, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on August 24, 1953, in Oregon, Illinois, Connie was the daughter of Laverne and Dorothy (Roderick) Gilbert. She attended Oregon schools and was a member of East Oregon Chapel Church of God throughout her life.

Connie was a devoted wife, loving mother, and dedicated homemaker whose life was centered on faith, family, and caring for those she loved. On June 7, 1980, she married Shelly Mummert. Together they shared 46 years of marriage, building a home filled with love, laughter, compassion, and unwavering faith.

There are some people whose lives are measured not by the years they lived, but by the love they gave away. Connie was one of those rare souls. Truly one in a million, she possessed a heart overflowing with kindness, compassion, and grace. Her greatest joy was children, and she demonstrated that love every day of her life.

As a foster mother, Connie opened her heart and home to 36 children over the years. She welcomed each one with unconditional love, patience, and encouragement. Countless lives were changed because of her willingness to care for children in need. Their house was never just a home; it was a refuge, a place where every child who walked through the door knew they were loved. Whether they stayed for a day, a season, or a lifetime, Connie made each child feel safe, accepted, and cherished. Her influence reached far beyond her own family, and her legacy will live on through the many lives she nurtured, guided, and loved.

Family was Connie's greatest blessing and life's work. She is survived by her husband, Shelly Mummert; their children, Ed (Justine) Messenger, Cindy (Rob) Thommen, Eric (Robyn) Messenger, Nathaniel (Lonna) Mummert, Johnathan Mummert, and Nikolas Mummert; her cherished 8 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; sister, Jean (Dave) Baker, and their families; along with many extended family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Laverne and Dorothy Gilbert; her grandparents; and other beloved family members who welcome her into eternal rest.

Connie faced her illness with remarkable courage and determination. Even during her most difficult days, she never lost hope and fought until the very end. Her strength, faith, and resilience was an inspiration to all. Those who loved her will forever remember her warm smile, laughter, generous spirit, and the words of love she gave freely, fully and without reservation. While her absence leaves a profound void, her kindness, unwavering love for children, devotion to family, and steadfast faith have left a legacy that can never be replaced. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all whose lives she touched.

If love could be measured by the lives she touched, Connie's legacy would be immeasurable.

Funeral services will be held at 2pm, Saturday, August 22, 2026, at East Oregon Chapel Church of God, with her great-nephew, Pastor Talon Paul, officiating. A private burial will take place at a later date at Daysville Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the family, to be directed to the recipient of their choosing.

"Well done, good and faithful servant."
